Standard NS 1.2:

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers (integers, fractions, and terminating decimals) and take positive rational numbers to whole-number powers.

Student Friendly Language: I can add substract multply and divide, know what the diffrence between racional, and irrational numbers and I can take positive rational numbers to whole number powers.

Sample Problem:  5/8 / 7/3

Exemplar:  5/8 / 7/3

                             1. 5/8 x 3/7

The first thing you would do is find the reciprocal of 7/3 and then that would turn into 3/7.

                              2. 5/8 x 3/7

You now have a new equation to solve. After finding the reciprocal you will need to turn the division into multiplication.

                              3. 5 x 8

You will now be able to multiply. Before you do start, see if you can cross cancel. In this problem, you will not be able to cross cancel so you have to just multiply straight across. Start multipling 5 x 8

                              4. 40

Your answer should be 40. Forty will be your numerator.

                              5. 3 x 7

You no will have to multiply 3 x 7. Your answer will be the denominator.

                             6. 21

The answer is 21. Twenty-one is now your denominator.

                             7.40/21

You now have 40/21. Now look at it and see if it can be reduced. If so, please do.

                            8. 1 19/21

Since you can reduce it, reduce it to 1 19/21.

                           9. 40/21

Unless you are asked specifically to reduce it to a mixed fraction, leave it as an improper fracction. That would make your answer 40/21and your last step would be 7.
