Algebra 2.0

ByEva Kelly, Qazie Cha, Seth Steen, and Nick Gomez

Standard Text:

Students understand and use such operations a taking the opposite, finding the reciprocal, taking a root, and raising to a fractional power.  They understand and use the rules of exponents.

Student Friendly:

We can find reciprocals and roots, and we can understand how to take the opposite and raise numbers to a fractional power. We can understand and solve expressions and equations that involve the exponent rules.

Exponent Rules:

1. Product of Powers

Formula

2. Quotient of Powers

Formula

3. Power of Powers

Formula

4. Negative Powers

Formula

5. Fractional Powers

Formula

6. Zero Powers

Formula

7. Power of Products

Formula

8. Power of Quotients

Formula

Here is an example problem:

Formula

The first step is to simplify the roots so the square root of 18 can become the square root of 9 times the square root of 2 and 2 cubed equals 8.

Formula

From there you simplify the square root of 9 to 3.

Formula

Since you cannot have a root in the denominator of a fraction we must get rid of it by multiplying by that square root over itself because it is like multiplying by 1.

Formula

Now you multiply the square root of 8 into the numerator and the denominator.

Formula

Now you multiply the square root of 2 by the square root of 8 to get the square root of 16, and you simplify the square root of 64 to 8.

Formula

Now simplify the square root of 16 to 4.

Formula

Now simplify 3 times 4.

Formula

Now simplify the fraction 12/8 to 3/2 and that is your answer.
